Need tires in the upcoming months, Size recomendations?

I am in need of replacing my tires on my 96 ZJ. Right now it has the michelin 235/75/15 right now.. My book stated a 225 size tire..

I was thinking about the BF goodrich either all terrain TA or the mud terrain...

The Jeep is NOT lifted.. But there seems to be alot of body clearance, at least as what I can tell.. Can I go with a larger tire and will this affect my stock setup.. I am reading about people lifting thier jeeps and having to do all kinds of stuff like differentials and what not?

I want a nice wide beefier tire but want to stay with the stock deep dish type 5 star rims that are on the jeep...If you know what rims I mean. I think they are only 7 inch rims.. Whats the safest widest tire I can fit on these rims without tire rub and without messing up my suspension?

Can anyone offer me some insight?

Thanks
Spankey

Spankey,
The largest stock tire for your Jeep is the 245/70R15.
This came from the factory on 96 Laredo's with the Up Country suspension.

Here's something to think about:

the OEM 225/75 tire=
tread width - 168.75mm
sidewall - 56.25mm

the aftermarket 235/75 you have now=
tread width - 176.25mm
sidewall - 58.75mm

the optional OEM 245/70 tire=
tread width - 171.5mm
sidewall - 73.5mm

So, if you want to fill the wheelwell, the 245 looks like the way to go, but if you want more tread width, the 235's you are accustomed to appear to be the ticket. Not to mention the shorter sidewall will induce less body roll in turns.

HTH

my 245/70/16's Dueler AT REVO's will soon be on the market, where are you located?

Check out the Tire Rack web site. They have customer surveys on various brands and models of tires. I have Yokohama Geolanders on my WJ that I bought in March. I have put 10,000 miles on them and they don't appear to have worn at all. They are one of the highest rated tires at Tire Rack and are pretty reasonable priced.

I've got 255/70/16's on mine, and haven't rubbed once. I don't have disco's though. Keep that in mind.

I ran 265/70 on mine before the 20s.

You can run 30 x 9.50 15s are the largest you can run without rubbing.

Thanks all-

I am from eastern Pa.. But I believe that I will keep the 235's on there. They are already there so why change it. But I am looking at the BFG AT Ko's.

My mother inlaw works for a tire chain and can get me a discount.. The BFG's they stock.. The Bridgestones they have to order so I am going to most likely go with the BFGs...

I read that the MUD terrains are horrible on the road.. So seeing how I am only going to be off road about twice a year.. The AT's should be ok....

But again.. Thanks for your ideas and info...

so the largest you can go on the stock 15 inch wheel is a 30x9.5r15? i thought i had seen a jeep just like mine with my same wheels and he had 31x10.5 15 on there. i didnt get to talk to him i just saw it one day.

how much will your speedo be off with tires like that?

Texas ZJ1 08-09-2004 04:06 AM

Yes, you can rub 31s if you want the tires to rub like WT everytime you turn.

Great album!

What's the story behind 22_22A (the green Jeep with guys hanging off the passenger side and a big ditch under the driver's side)?
