Need to restore my paint

I need to restore some life back into the paint on my 94ZJ. I am too scared to wet sand it and the many applications of compounds to get to a stage were I can finally wax her seems taxing. So I have been reading the instructions on some rubbing compounds. The liquid ones state that you can use an orbital polisher for this. Using a device for a rubbing compound redefines the term “rubbing compound”. It sounds risky to me, but that would save a pound or two of sweat. Has anyone tried this? I also have a black Jeep, so any mistakes will show more on this than other colors.
