need a new muffler for my 5.9L

I'm looking for something not much louder than stock, this one is my DD, the stock muffler has a split in the side of it. What mufflers you V8 ZJ guys suggest? Not looking for an expensive top of the line muffler, just an off brand. These have the 2.5" pipe, center in, off set outlet, correct? I was quoted $110 for a new muffler installed, but it was for a 2.25" system but I'm pretty sure these have 2.5" pipe.

5.9's & clone have been sold & rolled.

2.5 in/out. I have a Flowmaster 44 and it's moderately loud, but not over bearing for a DD. Picked it up on ebay for $69 shipped, installed for $50.

The Flowmaster 70 series 3" in/out has a good sound to it. Probably a hair louder than stock.

Magnaflow gets my vote for the best sound hands down . I have flowmaster and magnaflow on different jeeps . Night and day difference

good old glasspack is always a budget friendly option. i have a thrush on my 318 and it's great. and not loud when you are cruising. but sounds great when you get on it

Make sure you get the small piece of 2.25" pipe between the cat and muffler replaced with 2.5". Worth a few ponies right there. Maybe the 5.9 didn't have that but all the other V8s did for sure.

I had a 3" FM 70 and it was a good bit louder than stock. Big and heavy, but beefy too. If you want to add weight to your rig go with that one.

My buddy had a Dynomax on his 350 GM truck and it sounded great. Not loud. I can't remember what model it was tho and there are a lot of them.

I'm running stock diameter downpipes to 2.5" Y connection, stock cat converter (2.5" in <-> out), 2.5" -> 3" pipe extension, Flowmaster Delta 60 series 3" chamber- type muffler, 3" exhaust with a 45 degree turndown at the rear axle. Not too bad at all on the inside (I hate loud exhaust). If you route the exhaust all the way to the back it'd result in a bit less cabin resonance and even quiter ride.

Much better sound on the outside compared to stock. Forget about glasspacks. They sound like crap and are for ricers IMO..

I'm leaning towards a thrush, walker, or magnaflow as of now. Keep in mind my big slate 5.9 has a hollow cat, and its straight piped after the cat. It's loud. The stock white one is my DD. I like to keep it quiet & nice riding. In fact, I'm looking for used stock size car tires, to store the 30's for winter. More stock I can keep it the better. No reason for having 2 lifted 5.9's when I can long arm & 5 speed the slate one & not do anything to the other one.

I definitely vote magnaflow for really good sound, but they will run a little bit more expensive.

Glasspacks on v8's sound good, its one of the classic muscle car sounds and one of the original performance mufflers. They get a bad rap now cause of 4 cylinder p.o.s cars slapping them on. I'm not saying glasspacks are the best mufflers, but they are budget friendly. Magnaflow, stainless works, flowmaster, etc., flow much better.

Um these Mufflers are 2.5 inchs in and out but the tailpipe is 3 inchs.... Its 2.25 by the Ypipe and then goes to 2.5 by the cat and out the rear of the muffler it 3s inches and the chrome exhaust tip is 4 inchs.. The muffler end might be 2.5 inchs.. But the exhaust pipe is 3 inchs.. Look for yourself.

This is not a 2.5 inch pipe lol its much too big in diameter.. the muffler is 2.5 you can see how much smaller the end is where its welded. Pretty sure you could just get a 3 inch muffler and the stock exhaust pipe will weld right on.. Any decent muffler shop has a pipe expander then can fit a 2.5 inch pip over a 3 inch pipe






See these 2 connections are 2.5..

See these 2 connections are 2.5..

If that's the stock cat and muffler on a 5.9 , it is 2.25 between the cat and mufler . 2.5" in /2.25 out on the cat , 2.25 in/2.5 out on the muffler . Only "size" difference between a 5.9 exhaust over the 5.2 is the tailpipe .

ZJ V8's have one weird set up for exhausts , no engineering awards were handed out for it's design .

Yes as far as I know its stock.. I haven't changed it.. the previous owner tho had it for 11-12 years.

That isn't 2.25 tho I don't think.. Look at the front of the cat.. The pipe there from the Y pipe to the single pipe is 2.5 inchs.. It looks 2.5 to me in the front.
