name that noise

name that "noise"

i am sitting in a drive thru line at a fast food rest. (yeah right "fast"). anyhow, my jeep is in drive and i have my foot on the brake. all of a sudden, i swear the engine is going to jump out of the hood. it was the most awful sounding noise - low-pitched grinding. and then it stopped. about a minute or so later it happened again. i catch a glimpse of the tach. it's fine. so i throw it in neutral and it idles fine (it's fine in park too). transmission???? torque-converter? any other ideas???

This is just a wild guess, but I had similar probs while accellerating past 50mph in my 94 ZJ and turns out I had a bad spark plug/cable. It was #6 perhaps that might be a prob? Again, just a guess. Hope you can resolve it without major cost!

Good luck!
