My ZJ died tonight....

My transfer case BLEW UP while driving down the highway. Spent hours waiting for AAA and the state police to show up as I ended on the end of an on ramp....the worst place to be. It was about 10 degrees with high winds today too. Felt great. Towing it onto the flat bed a large chunk of my TC fell off too...just great.

>>> EDIT: UPDATE NEAR BOTTOM OF PAGE 2 <<<

Were you having any problems with it, or did it just unexpectedly explode?

Will a 242 from a 98 work in my 96? I found several for 300 bucks, the lowest mileage is 74k

Sound good?

Should work. I do not think there is a difference in the length of the shafts. Bring your tape measure along.

Yea, not really sure what happened. I was gettin some vibes on the way to the rink for my hockey game....making mroe noises than usual at lower speeds. Gettin back on the highway to go home it was even worse, got some death wobble, slowed down, sped back up and then heard a bang followed by clanking (the case floppin around with the driveshaft). The people I had called to come help me (they have AAA, I don't) said they could see fluid from when I got on the highway, changed lanes when I slowed down for the DW, then a big pool and a trail to the breakdown lane.

Ended up sitting on the side of the highway for hours....sucked because it was freezing cold. Told AAA my TC blew and we needed a flatbed. They sent a wrecker so he couldnt tow me....AAA also said theyed call the state police, as I was at the end of an onramp...only about a foot of breakdown lane. The wrecker driver set up a flair....it went out before the staties showed up. Still no flatbed so the statie called their own towing company...just to get me off the highway, then I had to wait longer for the AAA guy to show up. It sucked.

So any word on different sizes for 242's between the years, or will a 242 from a 98 work in a 96? I got one 242 from a 98 with 77k for 250 with a 6 month warranty, or one from a 98 with 74k for 300, no warranty

How can you tell if it's good if its at the yard, already pulled? Are those decent prices? I'm planning on going with the 250 dollar one
