My rear end blew out

1J4GZ48S0WC****** IS MY VIN#

Anyone know which rear I need? How much do they cost at a junk yard, about?
It's my daily driver so I need to get it back on the road asap and on a budget

thanks

Fill out your vehicle specs.

V8 or 4.0L? Cant find a tag on one of the rear diff bolts? That'll give you all the info you need.

sorry. Thought vin was the key. It's a 98 zj 4.0l i6. It's not the all time 4x4. Don't know if that's call quadra trac or not. Any help is appreciated. I want to order it or pick up from junk yard and have local shop install it.

4.0 had the d35, any d35 from 96 - 98 should be a bolt in, but you might take this opportunity to swap in something stronger like a bolt in d44a from a V8 96+ zj, or go whole hog for a d60 or trussed 8.8.

Wouldnt all D44a's be 3:73 ratio? He most likely has 3:55's.

Apollo, you'll need to check that tag on differential bolts, on the one corner you should see 3:55 or 3:73. You need to match the ratio to the front axle.. or replace that as well. If you get an early D35 you'll want to save your rear disc parts to swap over from the drums.

Yes, sorry a D44a will require a regear for the front. A d35 behind a pre 96 V8 will also have the 3.73 gears but gears aren't that bad to swap between axles.

For my money I would find a post 96 V8 with factory tow and steal the limited slip d44a and the gears out of the d30 and put those in, but I seem to be alone in thinking that the limited slip d44a is a good axle.

I know they don't get nearly as much salt on the streets in Brooklyn as they do here, but up here you won't find a diff tag that's still readable.

Check what gear ratio you have by grabbing a buddy. Jack the rear end off the ground. Make a mark at the top of the tire and the bottom of your driveshaft. Have your buddy turn the tire two full rotations, while you're underneath watching the driveshaft. If it turns about 3 times, you have 3.55 gears. If it turns about 3-3/4 times, you have 3.73 gears.

That's assuming you have an open differential which you most likely do.

To see if you have the D35 or D44a, look at the diff cover.

You can also get all the information you'll ever need (and more) about what was originally on your jeep by getting a build sheet from jeep:

Just double check somebody hasn't already swapped axles or gears. If it blew out it's probably a turdy-five though.

Unless he has the tow package, get your build sheet.

no one here can check anything by vin number, and posting it online is generally regarded as a bad idea, like posting your license plate or phone number.

get the build sheet from jeep by the link posted. you'll find everything you need to know there.

'97 zj 5.2, some stuff, some other suff, and some things that even work sometimes.

Out of curiosity why is posting the vin a bad idea? You can walk up to a car and see it, why would it be something to keep private? Same with license plate.

definitely a d35c, almost certainly 3:55 if you do not have the tow package

I am looking for one as well in the NYC area. Most JYs have them listed around $400, which is a RIPOFF for the turdy five.

I am looking to pay around $150, and only if the bearings and axles aren't shot.
