My new $500 ZJ

Hello all!

I am Ryan from Upstate SC. I Jeep newb crossing over from the world of VW's (Weird I know).

I have a friend who has pressuring me into buying a Cherokee so we can do some outdoor stuff. So after a few days of searching CL i found a Red 4.0, 4x4 Laredo ZJ. They were asking $800 and i drove it home for $500!

Now for $500 its by no means perfect but atleast I have a new project and I'm happy!

The Good:
-The body is in very good shape for a 94!
-It runs and drives!
-4x4 works!
-It was $500

The bad:
-Check engine, brakes and ABS lights are on.
-234k miles (meh)
-There is a mild vibration throughout the car.
-There is a loud knocking sound coming from the front driver wheel every rotation.
-the interior is pretty dirty and some teenager made a mess of the wiring.
-shifts hard.
-None of the window motors work.
-Etc, etc, etc...

But with some help from friends we should e able to get her sorted out.

Cant wait ti explore the site and learn more about the world of ZJ's!

Nice! Thats not too bad for only $500. I'd love to buy wanna these for like $300 and just chop it up. Though I know that's not what your doing, i just like to ramble.

Look forward to seeing the progress made on it!

Looks real nice for 500 bones.

I can't tell what year it is but if it's 96 or newer you can do the key dance (google it) to get the codes.

The abs light is on in mine as well, never cared to look into it. But the brake light being on should be looked at asap. It could be a host of things but in my experience if the brakes feel fine it's usually just the brake pedal switch that needs adjusting.

234k miles? It's just now broken in, now you can really abuse it.

The vibration is probably due to the noise from the front drivers wheel. Check the bearing and cv/ujoint.

The wiring thing sucks, I hate previous owners. They all think they are master electricians.

Check your tv cable to see if you can fix the shifting problem. There are many how to's on youtube and here.

Check the fuse/relay/breaker for the windows. It's odd to have no working windows.

Welcome!

I like the '96-'98 matching color door, non matching badging & cladding XD. But for $500 id roll that, real clean, can't find them like that up here in mn.

'93 ZJ SE/Base Model/Sport/5.9 LTD clone.
Both built 5.9's have been sold & now rolled.

That works on 93-97 ZJs. Only the 98 needs a scanner.

The vibration coming from the wheel is most likely a bad wheel hub assembly. Easy fix. Buddies subaru was just doing the same thing last week and we replaced it rather quick when the part came in. Wish you luck on your new project : p

Nice find. I picked up my '96 Limited for $500 as well, though the paint and body on yours appears to be in better condition.

His: '00 WJ 4.7 Limited- Some stuff

Hers: '03 WJ 4.7 Laredo- Some more stuff

Thats awesome! Love the color (same as mine!). I like most others on here are in the same boat, sorting out problems one step at a time. Here's mine, its a 94 with the 5.2l. I've been dealing with a lot of the same problems as you, good luck with everything!

that explains why the windows wont work probably not the same wiring from the 94 to 96-98 years, or just a bad driver control unit(id start there before putting new motors in)

Vibration ? Pull the front drive shaft and see if the vibration goes away. It is a common issue on these cars. Pull the front drive shaft before you spend a bunch of $$$. My Jeep shook like hell, I changed half shafts, wheel bearing, sway bars, got an alignment... l still had the vibration. Took out the front drive shaft and no more vibration. Try it before you go changing a bunch of parts.
