My Jeep is stalling and running rough

Hey Guys, I really need some help. I bought a 1993 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo. It has a V8 5.2 engine. I have only had it for 2 months. Here is the problem: When I start it, I have to floor the gas pedal until it kicks over. Then, I have to try and keep it idle so it won't die. Sometimes there is black smoke that comes out of the pipe. Usually it will die a couple of times before I can put it in gear and go. Usually that is when it will die, when I put it in drive to take off. Now once it goes, it seems to run pretty good. A couple of friends have told me it's my fuel pump, but other friends have told me that a fuel pump either works, or goes out completely and then it would not get fuel at all. I had another friend tell me that it is the catalytic converter. I have been reading this forum and tried a couple of things that were suggested. I took a rubber hammer and tapped on the catalytic converter but didn't hear anything rattling around. I took out the oxygen sensor and cleaned it with gasoline. The oxygen sensor was very dirty (black). I put in back in and the jeep seemed to run better for about a day. Anyone have any suggestions? Oh, and another thing is that it is only getting about 8 miles to the gallon. I don't think that is normal, is it? The gauges all seem to be normal and the engine light is not on. I really like the jeep and hope it isn't something too expensive to fix. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks
