My Drop Bumper I made...

Got pulled over for bumper height the other night. 25" to the bottom of the bumper here. I was at like 29". Now at 23"

Made this over the course of two days, and decided to add a hitch and d-rings back on it.

Here ya go. Mounts into the hitch and then two more supports with grade 8 bolts into the back end of the hitch. Pics.

It slides into the tow hitch reciever. I think it will hold just fine. Good job Redhatman

That's a retarded law. Seems like they make these laws just cause they're bored or something.

I call it stupid too. Although when I think about it, lower cars need a lower bumper to hit instead of being beheaded. But for the record, I still call it stupid.

looks great but defiantly beef up how it mounts to the jeep. those 2 bolts just aint going to hold up to the forces your going to see when you pull your self out or even towing something.

all in all kudos to u for building that. it takes alot of skill to make something useful from scratch.

edit never mind i didnt see that it slid into the hitch.

Pat, nice thinking on mounting it to the hitch. I don't mean to be too critical but the 1x0.5" flat bar you used for the "supports" won't do anything but maybe stop some rattles.

What are you using to weld this? (ie process and set up)

I'm a little concerned about your weld for the 2" box tube that fits into the hitch receiver, it looks like it is just butt welded to the angle iron...

What did you use to cut that 1/2 flat stock?

Anyway, I don't mean to come down on you, but I would consider redoing that receiver connection.

Keep working and learning as you go.

*EDIT*
Something like this for the hitch mount.

I am glad you posted again after that because I was going to call you RETARTED.

EMtimZJ, I completely agree with your idea, however I am on prohibation for some tickets and have already had a couple cops on my case so I cant afford to go without a drop bumper for long at all.

It was welded with an industrial welder at school. HUGE welder, with a separate spool. Hardwire MIG.

I am Very confident in the welds.

The side supports were basically a "gusset" for side pulls on the d-rings or hitch, and to help distribute impact if a rear-ending does occur. Just because there was not room for triangular gussets on the actual hitch itself.

Main Piece is 3x3 .25" wall. D-rings are 1/2" found at northern tool. Side supports are 1 x .5" solid steel. Reciever tubes are 1/4" wall with 2" reciever setups. Gussets are 1/2" Solid.
