I've found the MPG average to be pretty accurate by comparing it to my results from using the site Fuel.ly to track. However, I would not say the "Miles To Empty" is accurate at all.
I see people complain about miles to empty aka "DTE" all the time. The DTE is loosely based off the current mpg calculation and the average mpg. I go down a long hill to work, well I call it a hill it's really a mountain. If I fill up at the gas station at top of hill. My DTE starts at about 385, at the bottom of that hill, coasting all the way down, it goes up to around 490 miles. As soon as I use the accelerator and my current/avg mpg begin to go down, so does the DTE. That is why if you coast a lot when it gets down to around 5 miles left, you can actually make it go back up if you get good mpg. Once it hits 0, it will never come back and let's be real, what gas gauge ever hits empty when you actually run out of gas.
I posted here about miles after the low fuel light goes on. I went another 60 miles. IIRC the DTE was at 0 after just a few miles once the low fuel light lit.
MPG reading is fairly accurate (both momentary mpg and average mpg), I've checked it multiple times and the average mpg is is actually very close to the truth.
However, my fuel gauge doesn't read correctly and the DTE is way off due to that. When my fuel gauge is showing 1/8 of fuel left, in reality there is only about 1.5 gallons left..
i've found i can easily get 20-30 miles with the DTE at 0... ymmv (literally)
the mpg... most of the time it's within .5mpg sometimes it's off by a bit more... one time it said i got somewhere around 15 and it was actually a little over 19
^- if you're talking about the average MPG, it can show way better or worse MPG than on your current tank, depending on when you've reset the trip computer and how/ where you've been driving after that.
Ie. if you've been driving on highways for the past 3000 miles, and you then go wheeling for a day. You may have 17mpg average on the computer, but only get 10mpg average on the tank when you went wheeling. However, it won't affect the average mpg much at all.
i use the in dash one to say "i think i'll reset that and see how much driving i did today" only to remember that i forgot halfway through all the driving i did
for oil changes i have switched to the 6 months regardless of miles... which is usually in the 3-4K range for me
I check mine every time I fill up as I also reset everything when I fill up. Try to always reset everything in my Jeep's when I fill up, not sure how people stand not to.
Either way, the overhead consistantly reads 0.5-1mpg higher than what I'm getting. For example, yesterday it said 20.8mpg. Hand calculated I got 20.01mpg. Ive noticed my speedo reads 1-2mph high though, so my mpg is actually a little lower but not by much.
My DTE is pretty dead on. At first its not but as it draws nearly to E when it says 0 you literally have 0 miles left. When it gets to 1/4tank Ive started looking for a gas station. Just last week I had 425mi on a tank and the light came on. Went to fill up and it took 21 gallons. Ive waited till it was pegged on E before and put 24 gallons in it.
My 98 5.9 is not like that. When it says E it takes like 17 gallons.
Keep in mind, if you are lifted with bigger tires or have re-geared and haven't installed the correct tooth speedometer gear to compensate for the tire size change, then the trip computer and your speedometer will be off. Novak has a helpful explanation and chart about speedometer gears here.
Realtree camo....but it is kinda thick. It was in the back of the jeep with 2 cans of 3m when I gave $600 for it so I said....why the hell not!
