Missing Catalytic converter? Need it??

I just picked up my 1996 jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo 5.2l full time 4x4 from storage to complete my suspension, tires and brakes.
It ran great, but we moved and I had to put it into outdoor storage for spring and summer 2013.

went under the rig to put the new shocks in , and my exhaust is completely cut out.
from about trans to the gas tank, cat and muffler are gone, they didn't cut off the O2 sensor wire thank goodness.. but ... now what should I do?

Can I run it with a 26" Thrust Glasspack?
Can it run without the Catalytic Converter and down O2 sensor?
Do I really need the muffler, Cat and down O2 sensor?

If your state requires emmissions testing, you will need a cat and muffler....If not, then that depends on what you want to do, how much you want to spend, and how loud you like your exhaust... No muffler and cat will be loud as hell... I have a 5.9L in my 2500 ram with a Flowmaster and I like the sound, but when I am towing it does get a little loud... Not running a cat may throw a check engine light... My suggestion is to replace the cat, and put a good free flowing muffler on it...Good sound and better mileage and power...

I'll post before a mod does. Since removing your cat is illegal, they don't entertain talking about it on these forums. It's their policy. That being said it's not your fault there's no cat.
I'd suggest finishing the exhaust out the back, maybe with a high flow cat. I did this and it did help mpg some.

Before Texas sees this ill give some advice. Do what you want to your taste but put a cat in. It's frowned upon the forums and can get you banned. It's not your fault it's gone I'm just informing. I have a super 44 on mine and love it

Sent from my iPhone using JeepForum so it probably looks goofy.

Federal law requires a cat, regardless of whether your state or locality does emissions testing.

I ran a stock cat with no muffler and side exit in front of the rear wheel. It was cool for about an hour then it just got annoying. Lots of droning while cruising, and just a "trashy" sound when accelerating hard. A glass pack may take some of that out of it but I'm not sure. I currently have a free flowing cat and a 40 series Flowmaster running through the stock tail pipe. Has a great rumble to it and doesn't annoy you when cruising. You definitely know it's there.

If it isn't legal, don't do it.
