Making a safari rack...

I was thinking of making a safari roof rack in my welding class. Could anyone give me a few pics of theirs? I just want to know how it is constructed, as well as how it attaches to the stock roof rack. Also, if anyone can give me dimensions, that would be great. Note, I won't be making it exactly the same way as most of the bought ones are, so I don't need highly detailed information. Thanks in advance.

unless you are machining, i would recomend using something like surco's j100 roof rack mounts to build your rack to fit onto. I think you can get them from amazon.com for like 40 bux. But they are nice.

I would look at some of the at sites that sell them. Also look at light bars and how they mount. If you can follow what Im going to say. I would bend the ends of the marerial I was using around the existing rail and drill through the rail and bolt from the back with a large tab or washer to spread load from behind.

Or you could build the rack the same width of the rails and just weld angled tabs to bolt though.

I am chomping at the bit to get 220 in the garage ...that is also a project I am very interested in. I know a couple of guys made them over at mallcrawlin. Also check out the fab section on JF maybe someone did something there... and the XJ guys.
