The very early ZJ's were all I6 White Laredo with gray cloth seats. The first 400 were all the same. Non-AC units were also rare. 4 seat belt latches sounds like the double latch was mistakenly installed on both sides.

The ZJ was almost entirely designed by amc as a replacement to the XJ, and was designed around the 4.0. When chrysler bought jeep they made the decision to keep the XJ (since it sold so well) and add the grand cherokee so they shoe-horned their 318 into the ZJ. It wouldn't surprise me if they weren't ready with it at launch.

Is that true?

My '93 Laredo has a V8, 11/92 build date, and power cloth seats. Not ultra rare, but cool nonetheless.
Production of the ZJ began in earnest in early 1992, though the line toolings for the V8 model wouldn't be complete until much later- I was led to believe 2/93, though if you have an 11/92 V8, then I guess it must have been earlier.

The V8 wasn't so much an afterthought as it was added later in the design process, to my understanding, at Lee Iaccoca's behest. Lots of cars have their second engine options added later in production, for a number of reasons. From what I can tell, the Jeep version of the 46RE transmission, as well as the toolings to install the engine, weren't ready for production until after the line began manufacturing in early 1992.

Weird! Possibly a child seat thing?

I just found out that my ZJ has the extra back seat buckle as well. It looks just like maines1994zj photo.

Huh, mine has the four seat latches in the rear just like the pic too. I keep the long one stowed under the seat because it confuses people. I figured it was a bit longer so that larger people could sit back there.

I've seen a red-interior ZJ, driven 2 TSis, own an Orvis, have a buddy who has a same-year Orvis, have seen a few other Orvises, at least 5 niners, drove a 6th niner, and lookie-looed at at least 4 Grand Wagoneer ZJs, all in the last 2 years.

That's the neat thing about living in a big city- there's just so many more people, and so many more cars.

I have one of the silver Orvis Editions!

And it still has the retractable cargo cover that works!

My ZJ has a 10/92 build date. Red with 4.0L / 5 speed, cloth interior Laredo, power windows and locks, steel wheels. The white base models would have been before 10/92.
