Low Idle/Dying When Not In Gear

I have a 2000 Grand Cherokee (4.0L) that just recently started having idle problems. When I first start the engine, the idle is really low (less than 500 rpm) and the engine usually dies. There are no noticeable problems once I am in gear and driving, but if I am in park on neutral, the idle drops or the engine dies. The idle is also low while I am stopped in drive. There are no check engine lights. I was thinking that I might need to replace the TPS or another sensor but I am not sure. Has anyone had a similar problem or know what I should try first? Thanks a lot.

i have a 97 4.0L and mine does something similar where it will try to stall if i am coming to a stop or if i am already stopped and shifting from park into reverse or drive. However when it first starts up it idles at around 1000 rpm then slowly decreases, then once it warms up it starts having the problems.

Does the ZJ have a TPS? I thought it was mechanically connected but i may be wrong.

In any case I also do not know what the problem is. Some people have recommended that I do a tranny fluid change and try replacing the downstream 02 sensor. I am going to try these soon.

Yeah, try cleaning out your throttle body first and see if that helps. I used some intake cleaner spray and a toothbrush to scrub it out. How old is your battery? Sometimes the WJ's do funny things with low voltage....

I cleaned out the throttle body and the sensors on it a couple of days ago and have not had any problems since then. Hopefully that fixed it. Thanks for the help.
