Loud Grinding or Clicking when I start to Roll

My 98 Zj is making a loud grinding noise whenever I move. Sounds like gears grinding or the Park lock is partially engaged. Dont know where it is but i do know theres a recall. Cant find any diagrams. At slow speed, less than 2 mph, more of a clicking noise and is coming from Tranny. I pulled the transfer case thinkin it might be the chain, put the car in reverse and it was screaming. Dont need an expensive trip to the tranny shop right now. The GC is grounded! Any ideas about the problem or a fix ??? Need a little help.

Can you get it to make a similar noise when you just have it parked, engine off. Then try turning the front drive shaft back and fourth with your hand. The little give might make the same noise. I just posted a thread because my transfer case is messed up and it makes a similar sound when I do this.

only makes noise when the transmission is rotated. Before i took out the transfer case, if i put the TC in neutral the car would roll with no noise. Any other time it would make the noise if in drive or reverse when I let my foot off the brake. Sounds terrible and i havent moved it faster than 1 or 2 mph since it started. I have no clue what to do next.

it would even make the noise with tranny in N and transfer case in 2hi when i towed it home. Only putting the transfer in N would the noise stop. Drove just fine when I turned it off, and when I went to back out of the parking spot the noise started. Could the gears in the tranny be messed?? Its had a easy life and about 105,xxx!
