Loud, clicking engine when cold
When i start my car at the morning when is really cold (15 to -5) for the first 5 min the engine is pretty loud and i hear a clicking noise (probably from the cylinders). I know that the car has to run on higher rpm to heat up which will make it louder, but what about the clicking noise, is it normal?
Engine oil level is good.

What kind of oil are you using? 10w-30, 5w-30, etc? If its more of a ticking sound it might be lifter tick, especially if it goes away when it warms up.

10w-30 Mobil 1 Full Synthetic, so is the loud tick normal in cold temp.
"If its more of a ticking sound it might be lifter tick, especially if it goes away when it warms up." - Sorry, but have no idea what that means, but it all goes away after about 5 min when engine warms up

i run 5w-30 year round and experience a click when my WJ is warming up... my guess is valve noise.. i always wait for the jeep to warm up before i drive it... i dont think its a major concern

yeah if it goes away when warm, it's probably valvetrain noise, as long as you have good oil pressure, just don't get on it until its warm

i have a click that happens until my jeep warms up. almost confident its from the valvetrain. thou its been like that for about a year and no problems yet, just let it warm up then drive it.

Pretty normal. Isn't 5W-30 the recommended oil? Might help in really cold climate.

I haven't found a 4.0 I-6 that does not tick when it's below 45 degrees. I've tried 10W-30 & 5W-30 Mobile 1 along with 3 different brands of filters. Still goes tick tick tick in the mornings. Anyhow My ZJ did it when it had 80K on it and it still did it when I sold it with 160K on it Still Running very strong.
Like the others said As long as you have good oil pressure at start up you are probably fine. I always give my jeeps a good minute or so to warm up in the morning.

Unfortunately... I had what I thought was the same problem but it turned out to be one of those worst case scenerios. I'll have my Jeep back tomorrow hopefully - the entire top half of the motor was rebuilt. Ticking when the engine was cold led to ticking the whole time which eventually led to clanking. Threw three rods and the followers as well as the lifters were shot. Turns out three cylinders were misfiring and coolant was getting into the oil which explains my gradual loss of coolant and the engine overheating in Idaho out of absolutely nowhere!

I wouldn't be using 10W-30 in cold weather, that's pretty thick oil. YOu'll see even if you do use 5W-30, you'll still get a "tick". That most definitely is you lifters. It takes a while for the oil to work it's way back up to the top of the motor when it's cold out. That's why the noise goes away when your motor warms up.

wow... I love this Forum!! Yesterday I experienced this Ticking for the first time... very loud, and this morning when I started the Jeep same thing. Little scared that it might be major issue just starting... I have a Honda CBR that has some minor ticking, but its normal for that high revving motor.
I did just recently change my oil, running 10w-30 Mobil 1 same that was in it before the change... Tonight after work (12 hours) still 20 degrees outside, I did not get the ticking noise on startup... So Im not sure where to go from here. I guess wait and see what happens... I definately dont want anymore probs from the WJ! haha |
