Losing Coolant - 2002 GC

I recently bought a 2002 Grand Cherokee, and have had a few problems. Right before i drove it off the lot, the low coolant signal came on. the guy there said they probably just forgot to fill it up so he had them fill it right then. five days later the signal came on again and the reservoir tank had gone from the full to the add line in that time period. i took it in and they did a compression test. they said it was the radiator cap. evidently at 15 psi it would mess up and coolant was being lost that way. so they replaced the cap. i was out of town so my brother picked up the car for me. when i went to leave the next morning i checked the level and it was at the add line again. i took it to the service department immediately and they said they must have forgotten to refill the coolant. after driving around 2 days and 220 miles, i checked it this morning before work and with it not being run since the night before. the level showed to be at around an inch below the full line on the resevior. when they filled it though at the service it was at the full line. i drove it to work and checked it when the engine was hot. it showed backa t the full line. my question is should the coolant drop an inch in the resevoir and then rise when it is hot? i thought that is what it is supposed to do but i want to make sure since i had problems before. the pressure test showed that everything else was okay with the cooling system but should i be worried about the head gasket. there has been no sign of leaking on the ground so where did the coolant go when the radiator cap was bad? i know it is a lot of questions but i am really anxious to know.

well heat expands .... cold contracts so the small amount of up and down would be normal.... I thought it had a hot and cold mark

Coolant level should be checked when it's at operating temperature (hot) with the GC bottles. Mine doesn't have a hot or cold mark either. If it's on the line when it's hot, it's right on.
