looking at a ZJ questions

I'm ditching my YJ for something with a tolerable ride and some cargo space. I was checking out XJs but saw a '97 ZJ for $4500obo. I like the ZJ's buit thought they were out of my price range. I want to check it out tomorrow but have some questions.

It has 124K miles on it. I know that's alot for a '97, but do you think there's a lot of life left in it? I think it's been taken care of pretty well.

What's the hieght on the stock ZJ tire? And what's it take to get 31"s on there? Will 2" spacers work? I have brand spanken new 31's on the YJ that I wanna keep when I sell it.

Thanks in advance, CF

What motor is in the ZJ I have 150000 on mine and I just did a
compression test its within 4 lbs of its original pressure thats
pretty good..
And all you need is a budget boost to get 31's on a ZJ . And
RE has a good one . Of course you can always get a budget boost
from ebay. Just look up Grand Cherokee Lift .
I am biased but the ZJ is an awesome ride .. I get to go muddin
and on the way home I can set my cruise turn up the air and relax.
Gotta love that..

Thank you Swamp Boy. I'll look into that BB.

I'm looking at a 4.0 model. I actually prefer that for the fuel economy. especially with regular 87 going for $2.10+ around here.

I know the 4.0 is great engine but didn't know how they hold up pushing a heavy ZJ.

Now Did the ZJ come with a 4.0HO or standard 4.0?

About the trans., There's only two for '97 right? the 44RE and 42RE. I'm guessing the 44 is for 4WD and 42 for 2WD, is that right? If not, should I avoid either?

And there are two transfer cases, NV242 and NV249, should I avoid either of these?

Lots of people running the ZJ with 4.0 (WJ to for that matter)
There have been some reported tranny problems but I havent
experienced any.
As far as the transfer case the major difference is one will
go into 2wd and the other is full time 4wd , I have actually been
contemplating a swap , so I could be able to switch out of 4wd
I dont know if it will make any difference. I am sure someone else
has an opinion on this..
Good luck and welcome to the land of ZJ..

PSTT (in a wisper) Remember not to wave at the swb jeeps anymore. We are far better than them.. HA HA

if the ZJ you're looking at has a 249 transfer case, you'll want to check the vicious couping. Drive the Jeep UNTIL EVERYTHING IS WARMED UP. Then turn the wheel all the way one way or the other and drive in tight circles. If the ZJ binds up, bucks, jumps, etc... get the heck out of there and find another ZJ.

This problem doesn't show up when the truck's cold. I found this out the hard way, I bought a '95 ZJ and 2 months later took the CHEAP way out and paid $900 to swap to a 242 transfer case.

i have a stock 4.0 I6 and they push the ZJ fine, the have enough power to burn the hell out of my 30" tires on any type of terrain. it pushes my ZJ just fine, even though i would like to have the 5.9. and the gas mileage is better on the V8 than the I6 from what i have read and heard.

I'm finding it hard to believe that the V8 would get better gas mielage that the I6. Can anyone else back that up?

Consumerguide.com doesn't seem to support that:
http://auto.consumerguide.com/auto/u...fm/id/2053.htm

Thanks for the input. I'm sure that the 4.0 will be a big improvement over my current 258 (4.2).

Consumerguide.com states that the "Early" models have some reliablity issues. But what is early, 93-94? 93-95? Any Years to avoid in particular? The one I wanted to check out has been sold so my search goes on.
