Looking into buying a Grand Cherokee!!!

What things should I look out for? 5.2 vs 4.0 engine differences? Gas mileage? Year models to look for? Any tips would help!!

Been eyeballing this jeep...
http://cosprings.craigslist.org/cto/1289752835.html
Can get it for $1800 and he will give me the front drive shaft (I can install it).... has the 5.2L V8
Its a Laredo too...

Thanks!

5.2 all the way! Same (if not better) mpg then the 4.0. Does it have select trac? If not the VC in the is probably shot and thats why he took off the front drive shaft. You don't need to take out the front drive shaft in order to tow it. I would probably pass on the one you posted and keep looking.

The V8 is what sold me on the Grand Cherokee. I now have a 5.9 ready to go in. I would not consider a 4.0 unless I had no plans to lift or run bigger tires. With the V8 you also get a stronger transmission and rear axle.

Unless it's a 93-96 ZJ in which case you still get the turdy five.

And since they drove without a front driveshaft, they ruined the VC in the transfer case so expect a 242 swap in your future if you buy it.

Oh yeah.... but it's 93-95 not 96.

Hmm, I thought it was a mid-year switch?

Maybe so, I'm no expert. I know my '96 has a D44A though.

If you get the V8 it will more than likely come with the 249. A 242 swap is fairly cheap an easy so don't make your decision based on transfer cases.

I wanted the 4.0L, because I knew it was reliable and would last me a very long time. I am not planning on putting larger tires on. already have 245/75-16
and those are fine.

The one thing I knew to stay away from was the dual zone climate control.
So I searched out a 2004 Special Edition package. It gave me all the options I wanted. I am pleased with mine so far.

Good luck.

If you really want a V8, get a '96 - '98 because the 249 (full time 4wd) was improved. It is still not great but at least it sends power to the rear all the time unlike '93 - '95.
