Looking at a hi-mile 95 ZJ

A guy in town has a decent looking 95 ZJ. It's full-time 4wd with no other X-fer case option than 4-lo. Not sure I like that. It does, however, have overhead console, the little computer in the dash, and appears rust-free. It's a pukey tan color.

Tires are completely shot. He says it has a newer water pump and brakes. It's got 203,000 miles I think (looked in the window) but he says it has "i think 150,000 miles" (he has no clue what he has).

Anyway, I thought about getting it to replace my POS 99 XJ.

He wants $2000 for it and it's been sitting since last summer. I thought I'd offer around $1000 based on the mileage, tires, and the fact that it's filthy.

Would this have an 8.25 Chry Co rearend? Or are these Dana axles?

He says it has original trans, and that makes me a little leary, as my buddy lost the trans in his 95 Zj right around the same mileage. Also his front end was shot.

depending on what engine it has you will be able to tell what rear end it will have. it is either gonna have a Dana 35 or D44a. I have 142k on my ZJ and the trans still shifts fine, but I would still be leary on the fact that it has been sitting, and the fact that the guy does not know how many miles his jeep has will tell you that he didnt pay too close attention to anything on it. just my 2cents.

you can swap the 249 it has now to a 242 or 231 pretty easily.

It would have the turdy 5, even if it has a V8. (93-95 all ZJ's had the d35, 96-98 had a d35 with the 4.0 or a d44a with the 5.2/5.9) 150k is nothing as long as he kept up with maintenance. The only thing that might be an issue is the VC in the transfer case.

If it really does have 200k miles on it, I'd say bargain with him to get it lower or keep looking.

That's good, I am always leary of used vehicles for sale with new tires...could be trying to cover up a nasty wear pattern.

I'd plan on replacing or rebuilding just about everything at that mileage.

Not necessarily. I bought mine just after it turned 200k, and a lot of the nickel and dime things that could go wrong had already been replaced, 4.0s and 5.2s will run a long time if they've been taken care of. I paid $1700 for mine with the body and interior in excellent shape.

Maybe crank it up and take it for a spin to feel it out a bit instead of just looking through the window...

Towing package was an option for all ZJs up to mid-95, which had a Dana 44A with 3.73 gears and limited slip.
The Dana44A was introduced on V8 models (mandatory) midway through the 95 model year.

I said 'plan'

Hopefully that plan won't come to fruition.

$2000 is WAY WAY WAY too much for that truck.

You're right to offer $1000, but I wouldn't pay much more than that.

I don't know about Indiana, but ZJ's grow on trees here. I just sold my 93 WOody, leather V8 yada yada yada, with 120,000 miles, for 1700.

Forgot to mention it's a 4.0, or in his words "its gotta V6."

So the AWD TC is a "249"? I'll keep an eye out for a 242 somewhere.
