Lockers for a ZJ

Am starting a new project and am looking for info. I have a 95 5.2, and I only paid 700 for it. It has a blown engine, but the interior is in great condition.

I am looking at upgrading the axles to 4.56 gears with 33s. My question is about lockers. Has anybody run lockers with the 242 TC?

I have a CJ that is set up with a Detroit in the rear and a true track in the front. My last daily driver had ARBs front and back, but I am looking at options.

Yup. Works fine. I have a 242 in my Jeep now with an Aussie in the front. I enjoy the **** out of it wheeling!! I wouldnt run an mechanical type locker in the front with a 249 TC. Maybe look into a D44 for the rear if your 95 has a Dana 35. Its a direct swap and stronger.

I've got an Eaton E-locker up front. Guy who set up the gears said it was a PITA to install. I probably won't go that route again. the 242 has no problem with lockers.

did he say why the eaton was such a pain to install? I would figure it wouldn't be much different than an arb.

Thanks for the info. I do have a D44 waiting to be installed. It is out of an MJ, and I am planning on using the Artec truss.

It already has a RE lift and 32s. I am thinking about ACOS front and rear to get it a little higher for 33s, and some point replace the arms with a long arm setup.

I plan on a rebuild, maybe see what I can do to pump it up a little bit. I had money set aside for the rebuild, but I just bought a new house and used that money for new furniture.

Now that is done I can return to my project. I already purchased a Hanson front bumper, Rock Hard rear bumper with tire/gas can mounts, Rock Hard full roll cage, and last but not least Rockers.

Gotta love the Off Road Expo in Pomona!

It uses different bearings than stock, he said it required a lot of grinding to fit or something. He was a bit frustrated with the thing. He did a great job however.

My eaton eLocker in the front HP D30 didn't need any grinding. All in all, I liked it more than the ARB I had on my XJ.

Does eaton maybe have 27 and 30 spline Elockers and one would use different bearings and need the housing clearances or something?

I can't remember if eaton even has a 30- spline version, but if it did, the only difference would most likely be different side gears on the locker. Just like it is in just about any other 27-spline/ 30-spline versions of D30 lockers.

With the Eaton eLocker, you may need to grind the retaining tabs on the eLocker slightly (if your elocker comes with that type of electromagnet retainer), and of course drill a hole (no need to tap it) onto the housing for the electric wire. I can't remember if there was any grinding needed with an ARB, but it does use a different-than-OEM carrier bearing on the air tube side of the locker and needs a hole drilled and tapped in the housing.
