load noise after rear diff lock installation- aussie locker
Hi guys,
I have a situation with my wj and I would like to know if you have any experience with it and how do you think I can solve it – Here's all the relevant info – I have a 1999 wj with f+r long arms, 6" lift , front hd tom woods drive shaft ,front chromoly u joint hd axle (dana 30 )+arb air lock , original 247 t case . Yesterday have installed a rear auto diff lock –Aussie locker. Since then When I make strong turns in low speed I have a load clunky noise {not the normal click click which I can live with…}– seems like it comes from the jeep's center . My question is what & why makes this sound ? is it a bad installation issue ? is it possible it’s the t case since i am 4x4 all time ? If I'll swap my 247 t case to 242np will it help ? What other parts will I need to change if I want to make this swap ? will the 242 fit my rear d shaft {original }? will it fit my rear end of the front drive shaft ? Thanks Ronen

Not sure exactly what sound your hearing or if its bad or good..
But consider this - I swapped to a 242HD and the my rear aussie locker is almost completely NOT noticeable hen I am in 4 full time. I currently have my front drive shaft removed because of vibrations. So I drove it in the rain yesterday in 2WD and man i felt unsafe. Even on dry pavement it will lock up around turns a little (in 2WD). So switching to a 242 and driving in full time will greatly increase road manners.

I notice you have MX6 shocks, arent those too short for a 4" lift, esp with LA's?

Mine does it to every now and then. So far I've only noticed while in the grass. Tonight I'm going to a large parking lot to do some circles and see what happens

If the noise is a banging/klunking type of noise instead of a ratcheting noise then this is somewhat normal. This is from the locker binding up then releasing with a bang. As things wear in, this happens less. The banging type of noise happened a few times when I first installed the locker but after a few thousand miles on it, I haven't heard it in long time.
The locker will always make the ratcheting noise in turns. I've grown use to the various noises but my wife is always telling me to sell that lemon "It sounds like it is falling apart". ![]()

242HD is found in '02-'03 grand cherokees. The difference between swapping the HD over the regular 242 is that you need the rear drive shaft from the jeep the 242HD came from (or a shaft from carolina driveline or tom woods if you have $ to waste) because the aluminum tail housing is longer.

Its normal, mine did that too. Give it a few hundred miles to break in as long as your measurements were within spec. It also alot more noticeable with the 247 that transfercase does not like having the locker out back.
By putting in a 242HD or a 242 and using full time 4wd you will not notice the aussie locker at all really it makes veryy quiet clicking around turns with it even tight ones never binds up.

did you replace your side gear washers when you installed it? if you didnt, did you use a feeler to check your specs? did you pass the spin test?
