Labor cost on engine swap?

Does anyone have any idea how much the labor charge would be on an engine swap? My '93 GC has 285k on the current engine (inline 6 4.0L) and is starting to burn oil. I found a few engines that are anywhere from 500-900.00 and have between 40-90,000 miles on them. What would be my best bet if I wanted to stay around 1000-1500.00? I need to get this done ASAP, so any info would be great. Thanks.

my experiences with garages has been that if the parts cost 50 bucks then the labor is 50 bucks

so if the labor rate in your area is around 50 dollars an hour ... and an engine swap is at least a day long job........ 8 x 50......

some salvage yard do installs and are generally cheaper....

just shop around til you find the best price on the engine and installation

Wow, I hope labor would be around 400.00. That'd be awesome.

I emailed one guy from ebay, and he replied saying that labor is usually 800-1000.00, I hope your estimate is closer.

I paid $700 last engine swap I had done (was a retired mechanic). My friends engine died in her camry just a few weeks ago. cost $1100 for the shop to do it.

I would say somewhere between that..

Yeah, I just want an idea of how much others have paid so I don't get ripped off. I'd consider anywhere near 1,000 just for a labor a bit much, not quite a rip off, but a bit high.

I'd love to pay 4-600.00 to get it done somewhere.

How long would a swap usually take? I'd like to get this done within the next month and a half.

Hmm, that doesn't sound bad at all.

Where did you get your new(er) engine?

I was looking at yunkyarddog.com and had a few salvage yards send me emails with engines they had.

Anyone have any experience going through junkyard dog?

If anyone has any other suggestions for where to get an engine, i'm all ears.

I had a 360 engine replaced in a full size Grand Wagoneer everything cost about $3800. That was about 5 years ago.

GroundClearance, how much did you pay for it at the junkyard?

Did you put it in yourself or have a shop do it? If a shop, how much was the labor?

I got it for $750 and I was charged about $400 or less for labor, but again that was back when I lived in VA and had a whole lot of hook ups, so I really dont know for sure if thats a relalisic estimite. Also like I said I took the engine from a XJ, so there was a little fabing to get everything to mount right, but that may have changed the price too.

Don't forget about asking your local community college's automotive technology department if you can donate your Jeep as a gineau pig. That's assuming you can drop it off for a week and aren't concerned about any warranty.
