Knocking noise from gas tank area...

The other day I pulled into my driveway, turned off the engine and heard a repetitive knocking noise from the gas tank I think. It sounds like if you had something floating in the tank and it is sloshing around. It just started recently and it has been consistently around 35 degrees if that is any help. Any ideas on what this might be and if I need to worry? My jeep is a 1997 ZJ 4.0L I6

That is an audible low fuel warning. It is a little known feature and most people dont even know it is there.

What you may be hearing is your fuel level float bouncing off the bottom of the tank. Depending on the slope of the driveway, you may hear it with lower fuel levels.

I just got a full tank of gas though! Is it possible it is bouncing on the roof of the tank??

Mine does it too. Sounds like something floating on the surface hitting the sides.

I had this with a full tank the other day

I just put it down to the tank not having too many baffles in it and the fuel moving around, sure enough the longer it stood the less the noise was before it stopped
