Just got my FM 50 SUV muffler

Hey guys, I just got my Flowmaster muffler in the mail and opened it up. When I was looking at it I flipped it around to look into both inlet and outlet holes and when I tip it up and down the long way, it sounds like there almost like really small pebbles or something in there?????

Can someone give me some insight here??!!
Is that normal, like maybe some extra metal clippings or something when they made it......or should that not be happening?

Is it 2.5" in/out? If so you should ship it to me for "inspection"!

my guess is that just being bumped around made some slivers of fiberglass loose in there. Shouldn't be an issue. Put it on and see how it sounds. If it sounds fine, rev it a little and you could shake those pieces loose.

Flowmaster mufflers don't use fiberglass.

Sounds like a defective muffler.

That's what I thought at first, but I dont know....

Do you think that it is something that will just burn out inside of there once it is installed or do you think that a piece might have broken off during shipment?

I dont think it is anything to be worried about. Probably just metal shavings or something. Have you tried to shake them out to see what it is?

Yea I tried shaking it a little bit but really didnt try that hard cause I had some other stuff to do but I will try that and see what happens. I just hope that it didn't get busted during the shipment. If it is just metal shavings I am not going to worry about it but I will be really pissed it I get this thing all welded up and find out that is busted...

maybe you'd be better off clamping it on first in case you end up having to send it back or something...

"Metal shavings?"
What sort of machining operation do you think is involved in making a muffler?

He needs to at the very least contact Flowmaster and ask them what sort of story they might have to explain this.

I'd go with "it's defective."

Just call Flowmaster and ask them. Get the person's name you spoke to. Or e-mail them so you'll have a copy of what was said. That way if they say it was okay and then you put it on and it is broken you have some leverage. I'd say you'll be fine, though

Machining is the only operation which can introduce metal shavings.......

It's probably fine but as TennesseeWJ suggested you may want to talk to them.
