junkyard 44a Qs?

picking a ZJ 44a up soon and plan to take it from a u-pull-it bone yard. this is what i know to look for. 3.73, pinion and axle seal leaks, LSD. i could do without LSD but would be happier with it. main question: i know that the 44a has been known to have bearing issues, what should i check to make sure the bearings are ok? any other suggestiona would be appreciated also.

Edit: also im pretty sure i will need to shorten my DS. should i go that route or should i just pull the DS with the axle? also how much shorter is the 35 DS from the 44a DS, 2"? not sure.

thanks
john

take the driveshaft too.
hard to check rear bearings without it being in a vehicle.
going to be 3.73's unless they were swapped.
lsd is hard to find, the 5.9 limiteds came with them standard.

yea, not broken yet. just time for an upgrade. honestly i think i could run my set up forever with no major problems. im pretty easy on the gas. but gears, trimming, an hp30 and 35s are somewhere in the future and this is just one step closer to where i want my jeep to be. putting the MVC skid/truss on it too.

hoping this wasnt the case. theres really nothing to look at? or listen for? or wiggle? or something. if i do buy an axle with bad bearings, how dificult is it to replace them? not sure how the guts work. so theres a bearing on each side of the carrier and 2 on the pinion right? either or i will need to know how to set up gears to replace them right?
