JGC 97 motor idle problem

Hey from Denmark.

I have a problem with my jeep. Maybe its a small problem, hope so..

Here is the problem:
The engine starts fine, runs half a mile or so, then i brake or release the speeder, and then the engine shuts down. (the rpm drops rapidly)

I can start it again after a few minutes, with problems though. It takes around 10--15 seconds for the ignition to start the motor. And when i drive again, the same problem occours.

Do you have a clue on what might be the problem ?

There is oil in the system
The battery is ok

(

Could be several things, fuel filter clogged and not getting enough pressure to the engine, bad converter, vacume leak...... Do you a check engine light on?

The Check Engine lamp turns off when the motor is running.

Standard procedure i guess.

Can i change the fuel filter myself ?

I would get a can of Throttle body cleaner from the dealer first and follow the directions on the can. If that doesn't help, then try something else. The can is only 8 or so dollars American. I'm not sure what the exchange rate is right now.

Go to an auto parts store like checker and they most likely have one you can use.

Buy the Mopar Throttle Bottle Cleaner at the dealer and just read the instructions on the bottle. Use the entire bottle..

I have further checked the engine and found out the cooling system is leaking water.

So maybe theres no pressure in the water system.

Does that have effect on the motor idling ? Maybe the car computersystem crashes if the thermostat cant register any water ?

Found this in the haynes manual for the car :

11. Engine coolant temperature sensor.
The engine coolant temperature sensor
senses engine coolant temperature. The
PCM usess this information to control fuel
delivery and ignition timing

Chapter 6-4 Emissions and engine control systems

The book is called
Jeep Grand Cherokee
1993 thru 2000, all models
Haynes repair manual

I like the fuel filter, or better yet, the fuel pump. If it is about to die, then it will give you a CEL and kill the engine. You should have the pressure at the fuel rail tested to see if it is normal.

Also, I encourage taking off the IAC motor and cleaning it thoroughly. I did that recently with throttle body cleaner, and it fixed my high idle problems.

Hey again

It turned out to be the cooler.

So maybe it was the thermostat had an effect on the rpm's in idle mode.

Weird

Thanks for the help
