OK I have a 95 jeep grand Cherokee, it has 190k on it. My main problem is when driving it feels like it's going to drift away, and I constantly need to adjust my steering. Now there is some play in the pitman shaft on the gear box but I do not think that is the hole cause of the loose feeling that i have.(I am planning on putting a jy box in as soon as the snow goes) I have crawled under and checked the ball joints and the tie road ends, and the front track bar they all seem to be fine. I need some more help on what could be causing this.
Maybe you need to adjust your steering bolts. They are on your front lower control arms. They have a funny bracket on them which is what makes them adjust the axle according to the frame.
If you don't have the right tools (you'll know what they are, if you do) I'd take it to an alignment shop. But before doing so, can you describe your problem in little more detail? Which side is it drifting off to? Or is it both sides arbitrarily? Do you hear any noise while driving?
its maybe more to the left side more so than the right. it does not feel like a wheel alignment problem. the closes thing that it feel like is some one pushing on the front end, making it drift. there are no out of the ordinary noises. and there is no wobble when driving at highway speed. although when i am going less then 5mph there is a back and forth motion in the front end, like you are going over small bumps, when there are none.
When you check the front end components you need to have someone turn the wheel back and forth while you check the components. Mine looked good until i had my wife turn the wheel back and forth for a couple of minutes while I checked everything out. A new track bar improved mine about 85%. The ball joint on my pitman arm is a little worn but it can wait.
I can only imagine the condition of these if they are original . http://www.jeepforum.com/forum/f13/what-100k-ca-bushings-look-like-1027823/ Wheel alignment is useless if these are bad . Inspection means pulling the control arm , on the jeep , you just can not tell . I bet the center section falls out on the floor when you pull them (axle side)
Huge difference with new . Replace the sway bar frame bushings as well .
i had some one do just that, and thats way i know that the steering box needs to be replaced. the shaft that holds on the pitman is rocking a little. i know that this is some of the problem but not all of it
i do not know the repair history of the jeep, but i did replace the u-joints on the front axle 4 mouths ago. 1 side had 3 of the bearing gone and the cast part of the u-joint had a good 1/8 inch groove in them. my guess they were never done.
who ever had it be for me had to-do something to the front end i live in pa; where the pot holes can swallow a car; or at lest take the front end off. so there had to be work done to it i have no idea what. but when it get warm enough that i can get under it i will.
i need tips on what to replace.
