Interior Lights won't turn off when locking Jeep

I got my ZJ a few weeks back, and the interior lights never turned on when the doors would open or if I pushed the dimmer up all the way. They did turn on though when I would manually press them. I pulled a random relay from the relay/fuse area and placed it in one of the open relay areas, and it got the interior lights to turn on when the doors would open. Now my problem is, which is why the relay was missing to begin with probably, is when I lock the Jeep, the lights don't turn off. Although, when I get in, and close the door, and then turn the key in the ignition, they turn off like they normally should. I couldn't remember if they were set to a timer where they turned off after a period of time, but I let it sit for a few minutes, and they never turned off. What should I look into where they wouldn't turn off when the Jeep locks?
If anyone can help me with this, it'd be greatly appreciated.

I had (have) the same problem. It's pretty common. Start with the basics. Check all the mini fuses in the cab and then the other ones under the hood. Do you have a voltmeter? Try checking the relay fuse.

If you still can't figure out what's causing it and you don't want your Jeep to die, you can try what I did. I just put two wires in each of the fuse holes and connected them to an on/off switch. When the switch is on and the Jeep is on, they work like normal. But when I turn the Jeep off they stay on, so I just flip the switch off.

It's something that's messed up with the factory alarm. Because, I realized that only sometimes the horn will chirp when I would lock the doors, sometimes it wont. That means the factory alarm isn't always arming. Everytime I locked the doors earlier to see if they would turn off, the horn never chirped which means the alarm didn't arm, which wouldn't turn the lights off. I read in a similar thread, that theres a "switch" of somesort in the door panel. That's what I will be checking next.

mine was doing this exact thing. I actually had to unplug the key/alarm sensor plug in the driverside door.
meaning if i use the physical key in the tumbler my alarm doesn't disengage and am left with a jeep thinking it's getting stolen.. however my stupid interior lights shut off, and alarm is set.

That was my issue. The latch on the driver door. it wasn't fully engaging when closed so it never armed the factory alarm nor turn off the interior lights. Its fixed now. Thanks though everyone

The trunk light when pushed turns and keeps all the lights on in the Jeep push that and see if it turns off after you lock the door.. Or hit it a couple times. On our 4.0 it was causing the lights to stay on all the time and flicker at times too, gave it a whack and hasnt done it since been a year or so now

Mine is doing something similar but it happens only after it rains. I'm guessing the water is shorting something.

the horn honks when arming the alarm? is that just a 96+ thing or is it aftermarket equipment?
Edit:resurrected thread.. Just noticed this..
Hawkeye, I'd say youre on the right track, the humidity or the leaking water is shorting something out. I read somewhere about moisture messing with the PCM. The PCM controls the alarm, so.. After checking all the switches(sensors) at the doors, and the wires at the front doors for breaks/shorts/etc, checking the fuse boxes and relays, I'd be left with PCM having issues

I'm positive it's not the PCM. When it rains there's water getting into the B pillar some how. When I open the drivers door the interior light won't come on. I can however get the interior lights to come on when I wiggle the button light switch on the B pillar. When I use the lock door button on the drivers door it normally locks all the doors and activates the alarm also but when it rains it won't activate the alarm and the interior lights stay on.

There's your problem, Hawkeye. That little toggle "switch" also is what the PCM uses to arm/trigger the alarm. I think it is a ground open circuit(becomes an active/completed ground when door is open and switch is popped out), so I'd say water is causing a false open circuit. Either that or that switch is just worn out, that's a pretty common part to wear out. I believe autozone, oreilys, most of those places should have it pretty cheap for ya. No clue how hard it is to replace though I can't imagine it would give you too much grief
