Interchangeable trannys? 98 zj question

I currently have a 98 GC with a v6 4l engine. It currently has a wiring problem and won't start.
So I was looking to buy another 98 for the time being, but it has the 5.2 V8, full time 4x4 but has a bad tranny. My question is would i be able to take my tranny and, transfer case? Out of mine and replace that bad one? If so would I have to replace anything else and also would it in turn now be a part time 4wd or would it still be all time 4?

98 GC didn't come with v6 engines, there were 4.0L inline 6 and 5.2 v-8. You've probably got a 4.0 I6.

Trannies are different between 4.0 and 5.2 engines, different torque rating and different bellhousing (42RE on 4.0 and 44RE on 5.2).
You'd be able to pull a tranny off some junkyard 5.2 for about $200-300.
The transfer cases are the same as far as I know.

You'd be better off fixing yours, there's a good write up here:

Yes that's what i meant sorry about that. And I have read that write up and gave it to the shop that is working on it but they are being slow as hell with it so I was looking for a short term solution. Plus the other one I was looking at was better condition. But that you for the help before I wasted 600$ lol

First off, you don't have a 4.0L V-6. That would be a front wheel drive car engine (or the minivan engine the current Wrangler uses). You have a 4.0L Inline 6 cylinder. That is a bullet proof reliable old tractor style engine.

Now, on to the actual meat of your questions.

You have a 42RE transmission and it sounds like a NV231 or NV242 transfer case. The one you're looking at has a 44RE transmission and a NV249 transfer case. The transfer cases are interchangeable (with a couple small modifications). But there is nothing about the two transmissions that would be interchangeable. The bellhousing on your existing transmission is an integral part of the transmission housing, and the 5.2L V-8 has a much different bolt pattern. Plus the TCU's wouldn't be interchangeable.

[EDIT] Wow, that's what I get for watching "Fleming : The Man Who Would Be Bond" while answering. Took me too long and others answered first.
