Infinity Gold very little sound

I have a 1994 Limited ZJ. It has an infinity gold system. When you turn it on you can barely hear anything coming from the speakers, then if you turn it up the speakers distort and still are not loud. So I figured the amp was blown so I got another amp...I replaced them amp and I am still having the exact same problem. Is this common? Does any one have any experice with this?

The speaker cones could be blown out. Do the dash tweeters work?

You should pull everything that says infinity gold out of your truck and put it in the garbage where it belongs. You will be much happier with some average aftermarket stuff.

At this point that is good advice.

I kept my 94 Infinity system going as long as could. For its time, the head unit is a heavy duty, fairly bulletproof unit that can last ten years or more.

I repaired the speaker cones and repaired a bad solder joint in the head unit that was causing no display. Eventually the inner part of the cones separated from the diaphragm that moves up and down. They would have needed to be sent out to be re-coned. Then the CD player on the head unit started displaying 'Err' all the time. I swapped in some aftermarket stuff, but kept the amp, which still works to this day.

I think anything but the head units look tacky...call me crazy but I like the stock block text and the old style knobs and buttons...I want one with a CD and tape player but surprisingly they are rather expensive even now...like almost 100 bucks on eBay

crutchfield could be your best friend dude haha. some of the stuff is kinda pricey but its worth it. If you want a pretty sweet aftermarket set up i highly recommend alpine. plus they make this sweet lil amp that plugs into newer alpine head units

http://www.crutchfield.com/p_500KTP4...FFBrand|Alpine

I got an alpine (200 watt, bass engine, ipod control built in and it came with a 6 foot usb cord with the ipod plug in) head unit in my car along with the lil amp (180 watts) with the factory components and it bumps (380 watts). Get some sweet component speakers (stock speaker size is 6 3/4" front and rear) and you'll have one hell of a smile....or not idk haha.

I will check to see if the speakers are blown....but I would be surprised if all of them were blown to the point that I would have almost no sound coming from them when the radio is at full blast.

Also, I am not going to replace this system with aftermarket stuff since the headunit seems to be in good working order. I would consider putting speakers in it if all of the current ones are blown.

An aftermarket head unit with a pre amp will make everything sound ten times better.

Using stock amp?

Right now I have 4 Infinity Kappa's and an old school Pioneer head unit that probably 50% of the ZJ's have today lol.

What I'm noticing is it seems the stock amp is just really lacking now. I will probably be upgrading to a cheap one and possibly retain the stock amp wires

Has anyone ever seen a non blown stock speaker??? lol

I give a thumbs up to these speakers
http://www.crutchfield.com/s_091165CA1/Focal-Access-165CA1.html?search=Focal+VENDORID091&searchdisplay =Focal

They fit the front door perfectly in a ZJ except for redrilling the holes. I paid $199 for them (they are on sale now with free shipping) and I am more than happy. A true 6.75" speaker wasting no cone area. They rock.

No I don't work for Crutchfield.

All 4 speakers were gone in my girlfriends 94 zj. The result was barely any sound, as you describe. I think two were gone in mine when i bought it. I am not a high fidelity guy, I just enjoy a good working system.

I replaced our systems with middle of the road audio and used the stock amps. If you just want to replace the speakers with the stock system, do a search and chose wisely. If I remember correctly the stock amp is looking for a 2 ohm impedance speaker. They don't make many 2 ohm speakers anymore. I replaced mine with 4 ohm infinity reference speakers and am pleased with the results. Do not use 8 ohm speakers with the stock amp.

If you do go to aftermarket speakers, there may be clearance problems with the front window mechanism and the speaker magnet. High end speakers tend to have large magnets that will have fitment issues in the stock location. This can be overcome with fabrication if you are handy. If you want the least fabrication, chose a speaker with a similar mounting depth as the stock speaker.

I think the easiest fix is as someone suggested to have your original speakers repaired. There is no fabrication required then as they already fit. I didn't go that route as I am fairly handy and didn't trust the old speakers, so I rewired all my speakers and fabricated new mounts etc....

The high end guys would replace everything, with a fair amount of fabrication involved, possibly requiring charging system upgrades to the vehicle.

Only thing is they are 4 ohm so the amp will not be able to provide as many watts to them as they may desire. The Kappa's are 2 ohm and other then that they both have a fiberglass weave for the woofer, 6 3/4", a tweeter, and the Kappa's have a crossover as well as a button to select what range you want the highs.

On another note, crutchfield charges almost 100% mark up. I only buy from them if they are having an end of the year sale to get rid of old stock for the new model.

I recently fabricated home made speaker surrounds repaired the stock infinity gold speakers and posted the process i went through doing so here, i had a few people doubting the integrity of my work.. but since then Ive been punishing the speakers all the time, they are still going strong and not a hint of rasp anymore out of them, especially the one speaker in the passenger door i repaired over 2 years ago!!!
If someone wants to update their system or not is a personal choice of course but when the stock sound system is working properly in the jeep it sounds very decent, not the best out there mind you but again very decent!!!.

Got a few questions, since this system is setup way different then the MACH systems Ford uses that I'm used to.

1) So there's no sub in the infinity gold package??
2) Where is the amp located
3) Is it better to wire the current harness to use pre amp outputs, or wire the stock harness to just use the harness that plugs directly into the head unit? I know on my explorer I was able to use the MOSFET amp in the head unit to power my 4-door speakers, and then wired the amp and stock sub to use the preamp outputs.

The head unit I'm looking to use is a Sony Xploid CDX-GT24 or the Alpine CDE-124SXM.

2 of the speakers in the ZJ are blown, and the headunit needs to go (Get ERR with CD, and the balance and fade joystick is finicky).
