The really weird thing about this, its ran great from feburary till now, with maybe a hiccup here and their, never when i drove it, but the wife has made comments about it, but in the last 2 weeks, its started doing this every single day.

I could never get it to happen for me, so i didnt even know what i was trying to fix. Now i cant even keep the thing running.

Ill try adding a ground strap at the valve cover, but hell, i dont even think their is a hole in the firewall for it.

Are you saying you don't have a braided strap from the firewall on the driver's side going to the rear corner of the head?

i sent you a PM

Hey guys, what does the vacuum line that goes under the battery do??

I was moving it around, tugged on it, and pulled it off, i need to put it back on, I guess.

Anyhow, i got the truck, running, but i ive always been able to after awhile, it just a matter of how long will it stay running before it dies.

This is probably going to be the death of me, i had to borrow a car for her to drive until we can get this figured out, i refuse to take it to the stealership, hell i doubt they could even figure it out.

i tried to get the TPS out, but the screws wont even come out that hold it in, i ended up stripping them, im trying to source a throttle body right now, i can probably snag one up cheap. They are so small and tight, i highly doubt i could i easy-out them.

This may sound ridiculous, but I haven't seen it mentioned in any of the previous posts and I had SOME of the issues you're having with a '92. It ended up being the ignition switch that was worn out. The contacts inside it were burnt and corroded enough that it wouldn't maintain consistant connection and just as you have I did just about everything except the dynamite before I finally found it.

Please forgive my ignorance, but are you referring to the actual Key ignition?

If that was the case, would it still be hard to start? starts then rough idles and it acts like its trying very hard to stay running, then after a few minutes it straightens out, or sometimes, almost instantly straightens out,

Then will randomly shut off.

Whats the operating fuel pressure supposed to be on these? Im gonna rig something up to check fuel pressure and monitor. Ive got an electronic gauge from a project i can throw in their for the time being to see whats going on.

fuel pump ground

I have had similar problems with my Cherokee except for the dash lights going out. I started replacing parts and testing everything. Never any trouble codes.
Question, did it ever stumble right after getting gas usually at the gas station or on the way out? (sometimes would go for months with no issue)
My first exp.. with this was 5 yrs ago. I decided to take the tank out and see if it had dirt in it. Turns out, the fuel pump ground inside the tank was extremely loose. The connector somehow expands and becomes loose as a goose. I bent it back with pliers and made a tight fit again. Put it together and it never did that again until 2 weeks ago.
One morning it would not start. I checked for pressure at the fuel rail and there was none and no pump run. Checked all fuses and swapped the relay, still nothing. Then I remembered the fuel pump ground. I banged around on the tank and turned the key on and off listening for the pump. I heard it run, and the engine cranked. Next day, I went to the gas station and filled up. Then it would not start again at the gas station. It would try, but stumbled and quit. Towed it home, and next morning it started right up. Took the tank apart again and the ground wire was even looser than 5yrs previous. Replaced fuel pump and tightened ground again. It has been fine ever since.
Sometimes fuel at the rail does not mean there is enough pressure to actually
run. It is deceptive.... also these fuel pumps get dead spots sometimes that they can not restart from. I used to have to wack the side of my 87 Comanche and turn the key on and off to make the fuel pump start... good luck!

That goes to the vacuum canister, which is a strange black creature that lives in the stock bumper.

No, not the key cylinder, but the switch that is operated by the key cylinder. It's mounted on top of the steering column under the dash. It may not be all of the problem, like I said I had SOME of the problems you're having. The switch has two ignition circuits; one from the start position that energizes the ignition during cranking, and one from the on position. Mine was random during cranking and then once in the run position it had a mind of it's own. It finally got bad enough that it would fire when I cranked it like it was going to run and when I let off the start position it would die. That was when it dawned on me to check the switch. Your switch may not be the problem but it sounds like you've covered all your other options pretty well.

Thanks a million all. I went ahead and borrowed my old car from my friend so she would have a vehicle to drive while i figure this out.

I I have been trying to figure out where the hell the ground ever ran too in the first place. My firewall does not have anything on it, except one post, that is very slim, moves around very easily and is painted around it.

I have a hard time believing that was every a ground, even from chrysler. Im not sure it ever had one to begin with.

I will snap some pic tonight, and also, i will just replace that darn ignition switch and call it even, since ive replaced everything else and as soon as a i locate a TB ill ill replace the TPS with a new one i have here.

Thanks for all the help guys, ill keep you up to date,

I guess i now have to figure out how to plug that vacuum line back in, lol

Love me some Cherokee right now.
