ignition switch

i turned my car off at a gas station, went to start it back up and the key turns past where it is supposed to crank, i assume the ignition switch is broken possibly? i messed with it for like 10 minutes and i kinda pressed it in and turned and it started but now it wont start no matter how i do it. any one with experiance in this area help me out please.

well after some visits to the haynes manual and the canadian tire, i got the colum off and i am relying on my screwdriver for a key until the new igniton comes in a tiny piece of steel broke off the inside causing it to not be able to turn the key far enough to start the engine.
