I should be in the Submarine Club...submerged

I went out wheeling at Burrells Ford this weekend and had a good time. We went through alot of water crossings and mountainous trails and I got to one that was too deep for my ZJ. I "mis-judged" it. I was running fine around 4,000 RPM's through the crossing and then it dropped off and I the RPM's dropped to like 2,500 or so and the next thing I know I was pushing water and it was coming up close to my windshield. I got all the way out and the engine cut off at less than or around 1,000 RPM's. Hydrolocked. I took out the spark plugs and turned it over and shot a bunch of water out and there is still alot more to come out. The starter may have gone bad.(hopefully that rather than the engine throwing a rod) Any ideas on what else I should do in this situation? Thanks for all the help!

Edit: I threw a rod. Oh damn. Anybody know where a good place is to buy a new block?

Real shame you didn't cut the engine as soon as the rpm's dropped off, but that's a good lesson for everyone.

I'd be checking eBay for motors, or local junkyards for engines out of wrecked Cherokees and GC's.

Just go to eBay Search and type "Jeep Engine" and you'll see a bunch there

Including a 2004 4.0L Grand Cherokee engine, with only 2 miles on it, for $850 -- eBay item number 2424812830

you exactly right. Oh, and thanks for the item number. Will that engine bolt up to my 42RE and will it be a direct fit w/ the motor mounts, etc?

I really don't know, I would call the dealer's service manager and ask him directly to get his professional opinion. All you need is the shortblock assembly, although if you can use the head also, that would be a bonus -- a brand new engine would be a mighty nice silver lining, eh??

On the other hand, now that I think about it, the 2004 engine is probably distbutorless, which is great but you'd probably need the 2004 computer, etc.... Or would you be able to still put your distributor in the new block? I just don't know... That may not be the best one to get after all -- do that search and see what else you find -- lots of engines there....

What make you think you through a rod?Change the engine oil , pull the 6 plugs out. Put trans, fluid down the cyl, and spin the engine over. It should sing with no plugs in it!
And let it dry out!

I would CK the trans fluid to.

Well, I know for a fact I threw a rod because I CAN SEE IT. Nailed a huge hole in my oil pan (thats one hint) and the rod is now resting on my starter. I can post some pictures. Here they are.

Well that ends that ?
What I would do next is pull the head.
Drop the oil pan.
And replace what is needed! That can all be done with the engine still in place.

Thats what I would do!

It would also be fun. How much would you guess a new cylinder and a rod cost?

Not sure?
Oil pan would cost a few bucks$$$$ Dealer item only.
Rest you could pick-up at NAPA.
Not going to know whats the damage till you, tear it down.
Buy a Hayes manual. Lots of good "Info"
And get someone to help you. Not your "Girl friend"

How many miles on the engine already? I'd be looking at a replacement engine since they're pretty cheap to come by....

The 96-98 engines had several nice refinements in block design for smoothness, etc., and a better camshaft for a flatter torque curve, etc.... All you need is the short block. My father's '93 Grand Cherokee threw a rod some years ago, and the dealer put in a '98 short block assembly.

Or what about a stroker engine

He actually still had a little time left on his extended warranty, which is why he called the dealer for a tow and to get it fixed. (His threw a rod just pulling out of the driveway ... )
