I found a 242

I found a 242 for about 200 bucks and its from a 96 grand cherokee just like mine. So that thing should bolt right in correct? Also since is has full time 4 wheel drive like my 249 wouldnt it have a viscous coupler as well?

The full time 4WD on the 242 is an open center diff, where as the full time 4wd on the POS 249 (mines on its way out) is a limited slip center diff. Basically, it locks up when it detects a certain amount of unequal apportioning, where as on a 242 if say you had both back wheels off the ground in full time 4wd, they would spin and no power would go to the front. But that doesn't really matter, since it has 4lock too... I honestly don't know why the hell jeep even made the 249s. This was going to be my next "fix" but since I'm replacing my plenum gasket...

but if it is a 242 then it should bolt right in right? I was going to buy a 231 but decided not to because the one I see is a slip yoke and I am at 6 inch of life. I just want to get it in there soon

It should bolt in yes .... the only problem you may encounter is the input shaft lengths. All of the ZJ 242's have the .840" exposed input which is about 7/8" Pull yours and you should be happy.

It WILL bolt directly in. the input shaft is the exact same on all 96-98 242's and 249'2

Are there any durability differences between the 242 out of an I6 or V8? I know there are 242HDs out there, but if I have a 5.9 is that absolutely necessary?

That transfer case is known to have a lot of problems so I am going to do you a favor and give you my 249 and $50 can you bring it over to the LA area?

Zero difference. The 242 can handle anything the 5.9 can throw.

Is there a mileage ceiling one should be looking at when searching for these?

By the way guys, I'd recommend car-parts.com when searching for stuff at junk/salvage yards. There are TONS of 242s listed, some only a couple hundred bucks at our around 100K.

I know it is a direct bolt in, will the existing linkage need to be changed, or just the bezel?

Also, I have the center console computer which illuminates all four wheels when in 4hi, and none when in N, and all in 4Lo with a LOW light. Will the computer only display the rear wheels when in RWD, etc, or was the setup designed around the 249?

I'll give you 70 bucks for it, where in NY are you? I have a buddy up at school in Morrisville. I don't know if you are along the route back to MA but I could ask him if he would mind picking it up.
