Hub Bearing?

The Jeep Deel-uH says I need a new right front hub bearing. What are the symptoms of this. How can I verify this? Thanks

Jack up the front end.

Grab the tire at the outermost edge with both hands and check for play.

You watch where the play is being introduced while you do this. It will be obvious if its coming from the ball joint or the wheel bearing.

You can also rotate the tire by hand and listen for noise and feel for roughness.

Its pretty easy, maybe a 1 hour job.

Below is a great write-up. Its for removing a D30 axle shaft, so just follow it to the point where the unit bearing is removed (about the end of page 2).

http://www.stu-offroad.com/axle/d30/axle-1.htm

And if you can't get the unit bearing off, here's a trick for how to do that:

So when I goto the store and ask for a new CV joint I will get this?

And this just slides in slides out? There is no other bearings or seals that are going to need to be replaced?

Im getting noise from my front wheels, the boots are intact but I am sure the CV joints are worn they have not been replaced since I have owned the jeep ~50k miles. Most likely more.

Yeah the grab the tire and shake test works sometimes but not always. When I did that with mine I had no play at all but both hubs were toasted.

Just spin the tire when the Jeep is jacked up off the ground and listen/feel for rough spinning/grinding. I'm not sure about the rust content of your Jeep but a puller will greatly reduce the amount of cursing when trying to separate the hub from the axle.
