hey everyone,
im looking to re-gear my axles and I am running a d30 and d35 setup on my 96 ZJ...i planned on getting a HP30 from a Xj but am wondering if there is a difference between the HP and reg. 30 gears? isnt it just placement of the pinion in the housing?
also with the rear d35 how many different variations are there? I saw c-clip and non c-clip..how would I know which I have? Also which axle shafts are interchangeable between models? YJ/TJ/XJ/ZJ??
thanks guys....

The ring and pinion in a high pinion axle are "reverse cut". They are different than those in a low pinion axle. High pinion axles are stronger when used in a front differential because the drive force is exerted on the correct side of the ring gear.
I believe the D35's from 93+ are the same (The WJ D35 is an exception though). They're all 27 spline and c-clipped. Someone correct me if I'm wrong...
What size tires are you regearing for? It might be a better idea to look for a HP30 and 8.8 that are the correct ratio and can be swapped in. The HP30's and 8.8's were available with 4.10 gearing from the factory.

HP d30 has reverse cut gears, won't work in a LP d30.

ok so i got the answers for my gear interchange questions as the HP is reverse cut...i have 33's on there now with the stock 3.55 gears...Its my DD and i wheel it at most 5x a year locally and at rausch creek...so crazy gearing isnt necessary but I do want to move this beast...i was thinking about 4.56's but I just did my friends XJ and he has the HP30 and the chry. 8.25 and I put in detroit tru-trac's and 4.10s and hes running 33 baja claws...
what gear recommendations you suggest? IF i could get a 8.8 and a HP30 in both 4.10 ratio that would be a home-run...but are 4.10's suitable..or would the 4.56 be better?

Most would say 456's with the 4.0, I'm going to run 410's but I have the 5.2, and I'm only running 31's maybe 32's someday. I'd lean towards 456's.

Either ratio will be much better than what you currently have. If you have thoughts about going to 35's anytime in the future, go with 4.56's. If 33's are the biggest you'll ever get, 4.10's would be ok and should save some $ since you wouldn't have to regear.

i would like the 4.56's but for ease of swapping and everything it would probably benefit me to swap the HP30 and the 8.8 straight up with the 4.10 ratios...

yeah i already found a local yard that has both axles and has them from all different trucks so the picking is plentiful...hope I can work out a package deal for the two...im figuring i will eliminate my ABS so it doesnt matter if i get the ABS axles or not...hopefully I will locate two axles later this week and pick them up when i get my tax return!

According to the gear calculator here its would be around around 2100 RPM's at 65 with the 4.56's and around 1900 with the 4.10's.
