Get the V8 if you have a choice. You won't be sorry.

do not get one with the AW4 system or whatever it's called, with the full time awd, i heard it's no good, you want one with part time and full time 4wd.

correction - AW4 is a transmission and from what i am told, it is one of the better stock transmissions on Jeep GC's....

go to www.NAGCA.com and do a search for a video on AlaskaZJ and see what he has done and what he does with his ZJ.... you'd be very surprised....

Ditto on the V8 - you will not regret it, as for the AWD, I can't complain, mine's been pretty good to me.

I believe the all wheel drive system in the eights and some of the sixes use clutches that will wear faster than the chain and gears that are in the jeeps with a selctable Tcase.

I would avoid, actually I did avoid, gettint he tcase that keeps you in 4wheel drive all the time. The clutches will wear out evetually.

As far as off road ability, either one will do well, it is a Jeep.

I dont mind my 249 (awd transfer case..) It let me do this..

The grands also flex well...
Like this..

They will climb up on tires..

They will go thru mud this deep

Of course you only get this far out...Then you are stuck..

If you get the V8 they have awesome towing ability...

And they even pop wheelies if you try hard enough...

Hope that helps you make your decision.....

Hey, I'm not knocking the XJ driver yet, I've put 147K miles on the quadratrac, driven from coast to coast twice, wheeled at Big Bear, Miller, Texas, Arkansas, North Carolina, Virginia, and Florida.
I've never had a problem with it.

I'm not saying i dont like the quadratrac for on road driving, just saying i would rather have hubs to lock when offroading.
