How To Mount Rack On Roof Rails (No Cross Bars)

So im about to go get stuff to fab up a rack for my ZJ, but i have no idea how i can mount it to the roof rails. The Cross Bars i have now are no good and about to be taken off once i build the rack. How can i mount the Rack to the Roof rails that are on there. I just need something cheap that will keep it on there and not let it get stolen.

Please dont suggest i buy new cross bars or anything. Im doin this on a budget. Plus i want the satisfaction of doin it myself.

And also....I can weld/fab up something if necessary.

Well if you're the fabricator, fabricate up some new crossmembers. Remember you want what ever you do be able to withstand an accident with a load up there. ie: Needs to be able to withstand a sudden stop and not fly off the roof.

Im gonna go hunt down some channel stock. Any other ideas before i head out?

no,no tack weld just tighten them from the top and you shouldnt have a problem use a washer and a lock washer on top so they wont get loose.

what you need is some 2 inch and some 1 1/2 inch. here is one side not together. the 2 in one is ground down on one side so it sits flush when on the runner. the extra plate i welded to the rack and made the holes bigger so it could be positioned straight.
