how to get the keyless entry to work

I have a 96 zj that I had gotten recently. The keyfob didn't have batteries in it.Do I have to program it after adding batteries to make it work?If so is there a procedure that I can do to program it myself or is it something a dealer has to do?

The guy I bought it from said he changed the batteries and it still didn't work which is why I was wondering. He probably put the batteries in wrong.I'll check it out tomorrow with my growing list of things to do to it.

Thanks

My batteries were dead when I bought my 98 and after replacing them,it works, except when I unlock it,the memory feature resets my seats and mirrors to other positions.

I guess it kept the memory from the previous owners settings?I have to see if I have the batteries laying around. If I do I'll check mine.

I'm a tall guy,so the seat will adjust almost all the way forward, then my mirrors will be out of place.
When I first experienced this,I thought someone was playing around with my controls.

Unplug the driver side door seat memory set buttons. You'll have to adjust your seats If someone changes them but your mirrors and seat will not do crazy things when you unlock your heep. Eazy peezy.

The memory seat and mirror feature is set separately from the key fob. All you need to do is adjust the seat and mirrors the way you like them and press SET and 1. Now the key fob with the number 1 on the back will make the seat and mirrors go to your setting. Use SET and 2 for the other key fob.
