How do i tell which transmission I have?

I would appreciate any help you can provide, I spent a few hours in the forum and although I learned a lot did not find what I was looking for. I also checked a couple of vin number decoding sites but could not match some of the digits to tell which transmission was used.

My brother has a 93 Grand Cherokee limited, vin 1j4gz78s3pc689909, requiring a transmission replacement.

I looked around the web and saw that there are two types of trannies for this car at car-part.com, A.T., 6-242 (4.0L, VIN "S"), 42RE (w/o drain plug in pan); 4x4
A.T., 6-242 (4.0L, VIN "S"), Aisin-Warner AW4 (drain plug in pan), 4x4.

How do I know which of these two do I need?

Since I'll be shipping this overseas I need to make sure I get the right part.

Thanks in advance for any help you can provide

If the trans pan has a drain plug it is an AW4. If it has no drain it is a 42RE.

that's service right there.

the other way is to look at the shifter selections
od, 3, 2-1, means aw-4. d, 2, 1, with o/d off button on the dash means 42re.

Sweeeeet. After I read about the OP's recalls, it made me wonder if mine had any and if they had been done. Now I know. And uh, yea, the current owner is correct. Pretty cool to know it came from Louisiana though, as the emissions sticker on the windshield is from Texas. Yipee, I got "special" springs and glad I got all 4 of them instead of just 3.....lmao!
