How do I set timing on 2001 grand cherokee 4.0

I have just fitted a new cam to my 4.0 2001 grand cherokee (with coil packs).

My mechanic marked the gears before removal and we have reinstaled in the same position and replaced the cam sensor in the same position (we think).

How do you set the timing? will it run ok?, does the computer auto set the timing for me?

Any help would be great

Thanks

I think as long as your TDC #1 and cam is lined up correctly it should fire up. I may be corrected.

if you removed the distributor (or what used to be which is now just the cam position sensor) then you have to use a DRBIII to resync the computer for fuel injection timing with the cam timing. You can get it close but you have to use the scan tool to set it correctly. No other way to do it. Probably $50 to $100 at a dealer to set it correctly.

yes you still need to go to the dealer to get it all synced up, you may have got lucky and it is right but it could be off and you will either be late or early with the injector pulses. this can cause it to be a little rich or a little lean and will degrade your fuel economy.

that is how you adjust it, but you need aa DRB3 scan tool so you can watch the waveforms on teh cam sensor and the fuel injectors and sync those up. Otherwise it would be like turning a distributor without haveing a timing light to see the effect of it on the ignition advance.

It is using double the amount of fuel and has power loss at midrange, could that be because the computer needs a (re sync), I have a specialist local with the drb3 but not sure he knows what to do! How do you re sync the computor with the drb3 is it just timming set up ?
