How do I pull trouble codes?

It's a '97 ZJ.. I read something about holding the trip reset down but I don't seem to get anything

is there a way to pull the codes w/o a scanner?

Try and turn the key to the ON position(don't start the jeep), then back off. Do that about three to four times and the codes might show up in the odometer. My '02 does it but i don't know if a '97 will.

I believe it is on-off-on-off-on. Should work on the 97. The codes will show in the odometer as long as the light is on. Otherwise it will just say "done" Write down the codes and come back here to search them.
