How do I check the differential fluid...

...on my 1997 Grand Cherokee?

Can someone post or point me to a how-to web site? Search yielded no results.

You dont need a web site just take out the plug and put in your
finger if you feel oil you have oil . Fill fluid until it is level with your
plug. That is all.
The plug is easy to find its in the middle of your diff.
Just in case you didnt know that..

Not sure about your case, but on mine (242) there are two bolts. The bottom one is for the drain, the top for fill/check. Like he said, just stick your finger in there to see if it's topped off. BTW, can't hurt to change it while you're at it...just get a hand pump and put some fluid in.

Check your owners manual (you have one in the glove box, right?) for the type of gear oil (weight, grade, synthetic?) to get. Drain or suck out the old, pump in the new - until level with the bottom of the fill plug (as posted above) when parked on level ground. Easy!
