If the early tcase has a .840 input shaft it will bolt right in. If it is any other length you'll be in for a couple days misery.

the front half of the 249 will need to be mated to the 242. unless the gear cut and input length are the same then it will just bolt right up.

Input length is all that matters for mating to the tranny. Gear cut is internal to the tcase.
If the input length is anything but .840 you need to swap front case halves like in the thread right below this one.

sorry im talking about spline count on the input shaft, but i guess everything 91 and up was the 23 spline? not sure. i just know when i did my swap the input shafts were the same length but the donor was a 21 spline so i had to swap it for my 249 23 spline shaft. i swapped over the whole planetary gear set, it was a 1993 to an 1989 case so the ring and sun gears matched up.

still though, his 91 case is going to have the different internal gear cut since the change over was in 94, so he will need to use the front half of his 249.

ok the input length is .840. So now i just have to swap the input shaft because the splines wont match up correct?

unless you got it from a 4cyl it will be 23 spline.
