holds gear, won't upshift

when its cold out the automatic transmission holds its gear sending the rpm's through the roof. If I play with the gas pedal it sometimes will shift. whats wrong?

Thanks

I wonder were that dirt road goes?

Does the problem seem to go away after the vehicle has been driven and warmed up? Is is happening through all the gears or just some?

How long ago since the transmission fluid/filter was changed? Fluid level ok? Sticky pistons in the transmission valve body , low fluid or restricted fluid flow can cause it to shift poorly or sometimes not at all.

An experince I recently had was my transmission was not shifting into overdrive (along with some cruise control problems). It turned out for me that the TPS sensor (throttle position sensor) was faulty and was causing the trouble.

Just some food for trouble-shooting thought. Hope it helps.

Did you get that memo on the TPS reports?

It happens threw all gears. most severe when just started, have noticed not as bad after driving for while?

I don't know how long its been for the trans. fluid, bought it about 20k miles ago so its been at least that long.

Should I change, fluid, gasket and filter?

My personal preference is to change the tranny fluid and filter every 50-60k miles. IMHO that would be your cheapest option right now just to see if that fixes the trouble. After that, I'd say take it to the dealer/service center.

...on a side note...
You could put about 1/2oz. of brake fluid in the tranny and see if it helps. If the pistons in the valve body are sticking, this will help to soften them up and thus improve shifting. This is NOT a good long term fix! I would actually only perform this as an absolute last resort, on my own vehicle while no one else was looking.
