Hit 250K Tonight + 4WD Question

Well the jeep hit 250,000 miles today. Guess its broke in now.

We got quite a bit of rain today so got to a nice muddy area and attemped to shift into 4wd low. Well it didnt work so well.

Slowed down to about 5 mpg shifted the trans into neutral and shifted fairly easily into 4wd low. A short bit of grinding.

Now getting it to come back out of 4wd low is the question.

I could shift back into 4wd high but it would not go back into 2wd for anything. It also got stuck somewhere in between low and high and was making a slight popping/grinding noise when moving.

Finally after backing up a bit and putting it in neutral again I got it to shift out.

Is it possible the linkage is out of alignment? Or did I do something wrong?

The 231's can be stubborn coming out of 4-lo sometimes, I wouldn't sweat it.

Besides, if that's the most of your problems at 250k god bless!

I was just curious, because on the vehicle display thing the lights for the back wheels would go off and on.

And pushing the shift lever back into 2wd felt like I was going to break it, it wouldnt move for anything.

I know its not electronic shifting but would lead me to believe it was slipping in and out? Or the switch may be bad.

Just making sure the 4wd works before the trip to the badlands.

5mph is a bit fast if you want to shift into/out of 4-low w/o grinding...2-3 = no grinding most of the time...

Manual wasnt specific, but do you need to be in neutral to switch back out of 4 low?

When both shifting in and out of 4-low put the tranny in neutral...
