Help me decide

OK here's the problem. I have a loud knock in my engine when it is cold and then gets a little quieter when it warms up, but is always there. It started as a tic over a year ago but has gotten worse as time goes by.

I am figureing about $1000 to have someone go into the engine and find out what's wrong and fix it if they can.

I have a place that was recommended to me for replacing the engine, cost about $2700. That is with some new parts, hoses, water pump, and a power steering hose. The rebuilt engine would have a 3 year unlimited milage warrenty. I will drive about 140,000 miles in three years.

Opinons please.

I would go with the new engine with the warrenty.

1996 Jeep ZJ Orvis Edition 5.2L Completely stock with Up Country suspension.

I was kind of think the same thing because 140k is a lot of miles on an engine in 3 years and that warranty could be nice to have.

That's almost 50K a year, why so much?

120 miles a day round trip to work 6 days a week, and that will increase to about 140 in a couple of months, 2-4 round trips to Oklahoma a year, taking the wife shopping on my day off. I change my oil avery 3000 miles and average about 25 days between oil changes.

First the motor, then the trans, then the rear axle, then the transfer case. Throw in a radiator and water pump, maybe a sensor just for kicks.

Take the $2700 and put it down on a Honda.

HOW loud? Do you enough oil in there? I wouldn't replace the engine until you have to.

I could be a case of a clogged lifter (HLA) to be honest. I'd be willing to be a kerosene flush would do wonders of course I can't diagnose things without hearing them.

Not I. Hondas are reliable little cars, and if I needed a daily driver to get 30 mpg, they'd certainly be on my list

I take the bus to work. My transfer point is right in front of a Tranco transmission shop. All GM, Ford, and Mopar in their parking lot.
