Help with the gears in my dana 30

So I am regearing my front dana 30 axle from 3:07 gears to 4:11....through my research found out that I needed a carrier from one with with 3:73 gears or bigger and that they were in grand cherokees with the v8 and tow package

Now for my question....why are the gears that were on the carrier I got, which came out of a 96', standard rotation and not reverse cut like on the cherokees????

Because Cherokees used a High Pinion front axle, while Grand Cherokees used a Low Pinion.

Catsplat's right, the HP30 from the XJs uses reverse cut gears. you will have to get the 3.73 carrier and get a new reverse cut R&P

K, thanks for the help I feel much better now knowing that I ordered the right gears for my cherokee....it worried me when I compared them to the one out of the grand cherokee and they were opposite

yep, the HP30 turns on the stronger side of the gear, thus the reverse cut. and also the reason why ZJ owners consider it an upgrade to swap in an HP30. im due for one shortly because one of my axle nuts un torqued itself somehow and messed up the bearings.
