Put a tank of higher octane through and see what that does. Its possible you got some bad gasoline.

If it is due to that fill up then maybe a screwed up injector to me. Could be old gas, gas w/ too low an octane rating, gas w/ a lil water, etc. I hope that's what it is. I don't know if it's really as loud as the video makes it sound but it sounds loud enough to worry about.
To me it really sounds worse than something that would have come from a fill up. It sounds more like a trashed lifter. |

dude, I'm 110% sure its the lifter.
Had the same problem on my bro's escort. a piece of sludge might have gotten in there and clogged something preventing oil from getting to valve parts and lifters, causing the lifter to stick and clack. If the lifter is totally shot, you'll have to replace the lifter, or both that and the Cam. FOR GOODNESS SAKE DON'T DRIVE IT AROUND LIKE THAT. You'll wear a flat spot in the Camshaft, which means replacing that lifter will do jack for the noise. If its just the sludge, you can easily fix the problem like I did on the 'scort. Get new oil, filter, gunk 5 min engine cleaner, and a quart of Marvel Mystery oil from Autozone. Don't drive the Jeep until its fixed, we don't want to pull the head off. Run the gunk stuff through there first for about 5-7 min. If the engine starts to run a little rough, shut it off, as the oil is probably breaking down about now from how strong the stuff is. Drain the oil and take off the filter. Once its drained, leave the oil plug off and pour a small amount of oil into the valve cover to flush out any remaining stuff from the pan. Let the engine cool off. Then, put new filter on, plug back on the pan, and then pour the Marvel Mystery oil in first. This stuff won't breakdown the oil, and it cleans the engine up nice and good, but at a much slower rate. then pour the oil in. run the engine, but AT IDLE ONLY until operating temp is reached. run the engine as long as you'd like, but once oil pressure is getting below 35, I'd shut it off and let the engine cool. The next day, start it up, after about 10 seconds, the noise should be quieter now. If not, it might not be the sludge problem. Keep doing the running it till its warmed until the noise is gone. This is one of the better ways of doing it before you start taking off the head to replace a lifter that might not need replacing, just a sludge clot cleared. Much cheaper. Check and see if the noise is coming from the valve cover first though. The noise should get louder when you take off the oil cap on the valve cover. If its not coming from the valve train, then we'll have to look elsewhere for the problem, but if it is, try this first. |

unfortunately if it is a lifter that has died, you have to pull the head to get the lifters out on the newer I6s

Pulling off the head sucks. Which is why I'm hoping that its just a sludge clog.

didn't try seafoam. You could try that instead of the gunk stuff.
I don't know. Probably a lot. They'd charge you to take off the head, which requires taking off the intake manifold, exhaust manifold, valve cover, rockers, and any other parts that get in the way. Labor costs would be extreme. Try that thing I did on my brothers escort. Its a trick my grandpa said has saved many cars from going through the trouble of getting a head removed, lifter replaced, valve guides redone, camshaft put in. He was a mechanic for 30 years, and I go to him for all my tricks and tips. works everytime. |

Your talking about seafoaming into the intake and burning it with the gas. I'm talking about running it into the oil to clear out clots.
Actually, do both. Run seafoam through the intake and burn it out the exhaust to clean the valves, and then another can into the crankcase to clean the oil clogs. the gunk engine cleaner can't be burned with gas, its designed to clean the oil holes and ducts of sludge and buildup. not the same. |

yep, that's what you do. Seafoam is much more versatile than that gunk stuff. Seafoam also has instructions on their can. I've used it before, works nice.
Try that Marvel Mystery Oil. Its worked for me in many situations. You can put it in the gas as an upper cylinder lubricant and fuel pump lubricant, or in the crankcase to keep the engine sludge free. I did both on my brothers escort because the engine only takes 4 quarts of oil, so I had some to put into the gas tank (doesn't take much in the tank). |
